Wedges
Sometimes in golf the hardest shots are the little dinks around the green, give them too much and the golf ball races across the surface of the green, too little and the ball goes nowhere. Having reach the fringe of the green in two shots you end having a triple Bogey at a par 4. This, as I remember was the worst thing about being a novice, the time when you messed up a hole because a was useless at chip shots. Nowadays I simply put the ball on the green with my irons and then putt, I was amazed at how many shots I could knock of my score by avoiding having to get out the sand wedge or lob wedge.
I have though found that having a good and trusty wedge in the bag very useful for when I get into trouble in the sand of around the green. In the same fashion that we’ve made the rest of this category we tested the best wedges on the market to obtain our top five. So in ascending order…
5)Nike Tiger Woods-Most certainly the best that Nike have every made, it is heavy,so best mixed with the a slow rhythmic swing, this makes the balance of the club is near perfect. It is made from 1030 carbon steel, which gives the golf club a soft feel with plenty of feedback, a well made club at a good price $79:99 (£47:99).
4) Callaway X Tour-This is a club for all golfers, it is because it is usually slightly more expensive, but it gives unrivalled spin and stop.
3)Ping Tour-W-A personal favourite of mine, this club is faultless, it was by far the most accurate we every tested. What makes this golf club unique is its weight insert in the rear of the club head, which is for a soft touch.
2) TaylorMade Z-TP-This is the new revamped version of the TaylorMade RAC wedges, which were very good and popular golf clubs. If this test was based on looks alone it would win hands down, no argument, it is a beautiful looking wedges, worth having in your bag as mere decoration. But it is not just a pretty golf club, it has perfect wight and balance making this a truly spectacular wedge, with a reasonable price tag $79:99 (£47:99).
1) Titleist Vokey-This club has everything and more, it was easily the winner, because it was created by player feedback, not computer data, and that is so evident when you hold it and use the club. Ever so slightly more expensive but worth it, $90:00 (£54:00).
